Abstract
Objective To describe the epidemiological characteristics and trend of mortality of injury among residents in Guangdong. Methods Descriptive epidemiological method was used to analyze the death surveillance data among the residents of 5 national disease surveillance spots in Guangdong from 1990 to 1999. Results The annual mortality of injury was between 26.1 per 100 000 and 35.4 per 100 000 and the annual average mortality of injury was 30.7 per 100 000 which ranked the fourth of the classification of death causes. The mortality was higher among the young children and the older and it was lower among the teenagers and young adults. The mortality of injury in the rural area was 1.6 to 4.5 times of that in the urban area. The mortality of male was 1.0 to 2.3 times of that of female. The three leading causes of death of injury were traffic accident, drowning and suicide. The orders of leading causes of death of injury were different among different age groups, between urban and rural areas, and between males and females. Conclusions Injury has done great harms to the health and life of residents in Guangdong province, and it has become a significant public health issue gradually and more resources should be put into the study and control of injury.
