Abstract

Objective To investigate the diagnostic significance of ultrasonography calcification in benign and malignant thyroid nodules. Methods The pathological results and ultrasonography images of 115 patients with calcifications in thyroid nodules were studied, and the indexes including the boundary and morphology of thyroid nodules, calcification types and gender difference were analyzed synthetically in order to identify the diagnostic significance of ultrasonography. Results There were 74 patients with benign neoplasm and 41 patients with malignant neoplasm in all 115.The calcifications in benign thyroid nodules were mainly coarse calcification with clear boundary and regular morphology. While those in malignant thyroid nodules were mainly microcalcification with indistinct margin and irregular shape. The difference between the benign and malignant had statistical significance(P0.01).Composition of calcification in benign thyroid nodules was mainly coarse calcification(28.10%),while that in malignant thyroid nodules was mainly microcalcification(59.09%).The difference between the benign and malignant had statistical significance(P0.01).Conclusion Ultrasonography had specificity and can diagnose finely for microcalcification in thyroid nodules. It had important significance for diagnosis and therapeutics of thyroid carcinoma.
