Abstract
Objective To compare the curative and recurrent situation for the treatment of pterygium among three operative methods(simple excision of pterygium, combined excision of pterygium with auto-corneallimbus stem cell transplantation, and combined excision of pterygium with amnion transplantation).Design Retrospective case series.Participants 193 cases(217 eyes) with pterygium, who underwent the operation in The Second Artillery General Hospital of PLA from Aug.2007 to Aug.2010.Methods 193 cases(217 eyes) with pterygium were divided into 3 groups according to the operative method: combined excision of pterygium with auto-comedlimbus stem cell transplantation(group A)73 cases(81 eyes),combined excision of pterygium with amnion transplantation(group B) 54 cases(63 eyes),simple excision of pterygium(group C) 66 cases(73 eyes). After following up for one year, curative effects, recurrent rate and complications were compared among 3 groups.Main Outcome Measures Curative effect, recurrent rate and complications. Results Following up for 1 year after operation, four cases(4 eyes) recurred in group A,recurrence rate 4.94%;10 case(10 eye) in group B,recurrence rate 15.9%;20 cases(23 eye) in group C,recurrence rate 31.5%(P 0.01).No symblepharon case in group A,one case of symblepharon in group B,and 10 cases of symblepharon in group C.Conclusion Excision of pterygium combined with auto-corneallimbus stem cell transplantation is an effective method to treat pterygium, which can reduce the complications and the recurrence.
