The "Form-Spirit" perspective and its Influence of the People's Talkings in New Language

Abstract

The shaping of the esthetic view of form-spirit has the immediate connection with the personalities hold by the people in the times of Wei and Jin dynasties. In the book of People's Talkings in New Language, there is an obvious discrimination between form and spirit, which strikingly stresses the spirit at the expense of form. Furtherly, Gu Kaizhi's theory of vivid portraiture especially gave a long influence upon the later development of the form-spirit viewpoint.
