Effect of Losartan on left ventricular hypertrophy in patients with essential hypertension

Abstract
Objective To study the effect of Losartan on left ventricular hypertrophy in patients with essential hypertension. Methods The study population consisted of 60 patients with essential hyperension patients,and there were 20 patients with left ventricular hypertrophy in them.All patients received Losartan 50~100 mg per day for half a year.Left ventricular diameter and left ventricular mass index were measured by echocardiography.Results Losartan significantly decreased systolic blood pressure,diastolic blood pressure in patients with essential hypertesion(P0.01).For the patients with left ventricular hypertrophy,Losartan reduced both left ventricular end diastolic diameter and left ventricular mass(P0.05).Meanwhile diastolic left ventricular posterior wall thickness,ventricular septum thickness and left ventricular mass index were obviously improved(P0.01). Conclusions Losartan is an effective drug to cure essential hypertenssion and to reverse its left ventricular hypertrophy.
