"Distinctive colleges":analysis on the characteristics of the small residential liberal arts colleges in the U.S.A.

Abstract
Small residential liberal arts colleges are a type of unique higher education institution in the United States,well known for good practices in undergraduate education in spite of their small size and very low percentage in American higher education system,and usually share the following characteristics:taking liberal arts education as a core mission,making undergraduate education as the main task,keeping small size,emphasizing on excellent teaching more than on research,employing residential system and selective admission policy.Among them those selective liberal arts colleges prove to keep better balance between research and teaching,and put some good educational practices in undergraduate education.
