Female Imagery in Bai Juyi's Poems

Abstract

Bai Juyi was a great realistic poet in the Tang dynasty. The existing 2806 poems, among others, there are 103 poems on female. Widely concerned about various contemporary females in different social classes, such as workwomen, maid of honour, female performers and even imperial concubines, he described their love and hatred, happiness and adversity, perplexity, endeavor and even disobedience. Truly reflecting the life of women in Mid-Tang Dynasty, Bai Juyi’s poems concerned the fate of women and gave a significant expression to humanism.
