Effect of Zhuyu Tongmai capsule on carotid atherosclerotic plaque and blood lipid in patients with transient ischemic attack

Objective:To investigate the effect of Zhuyu Tongmai capsule on carotid atherosclerotic plaque and blood lipid in patients with transient ischemic attack (TIA). Methods:Sixty-five patients with TIA were randomly divided into 2 groups. The patients were treated with Zhuyu Tongmai capsule and aspirin in observation group and aspirin in control group for 3 months,respectively. The intima-media thickness (IMT) of carotid artery,the area of carotid atherosclerotic plaque,and the level of blood lipid were determined before and after treatment. The incidence rates of cerebrovascular events during the treatment in these 2 groups were compared. Results:After 3 months of treatment,the levels of serum cholesterol,triglyceride,and low density lipoprotein significantly decreased after treatment in observation group. Compared with control group,the IMT of carotid artery and the area of carotid atherosclerotic plaque significantly reduced in observation group. No significant difference in the incidence rates of cerebrovascular events was found between observation group and control group (9.7% vs. 20.1%). Conclusion:Zhuyu Tongmai capsule can regulate the level of blood lipid and reduce or stabilize the carotid atherosclerotic plaque.
