Abstract

Objective To investigate the relationship between serum iron, ferritin and lipid peroxidation injury in patients with hepatitis B-induced liver cirrhosis.Method 61 patients with hepatitis B cirrhosis were enrolled in this study.Serum iron was detected by chromatometry, ferritin by radioimmunoassay, malondialdehyde by thiobarbituric acid method, and superoxide dismutase by xanthine oxidase method. Results Serum iron and ferritin levels in patients with liver cirrhosis were higher significantly than that in control group.Serum iron, ferritin and malondialdehyde levels increased, and the superoxide dismutase level decreased as the liver function of Child-Pugh class deteriorated;serum iron and ferritin were significantly positively correlated with malondialdehyde(r=0.562,P0.01;r=0.535,P0.01),and negatively with superoxide dismutase(r=-0.429,P0.01;r=-0.422,P0.01).Conclusion There are significant correlation between serum iron, ferritin and lipid peroxidation injury in patients with liver cirrhosis. The overload of iron may enhance the hepatocyte damage.
