Abstract

A sensitive spectrophotometric method for determination of cobalt by chromogenic reagent 5-(2-benzothiazoleazo)-8-aminoquinoline (BTAQ) was developed. In the presence of CTMAB and borax buffer solution, cobalt forms a blue 1∶2 (metal∶ligand) complex with BTAQ. The molar absorptivity is 1.24×10 5L·mol -1·cm -1at 650 nm. Beers law is obeyed for cobalt in the concentration range 0-10μg/25 mL of solution. Trace amounts of cobalt in VB 12 and drainage sediment samples have been determined by the method with satisfactory results.
