Abstract

An inclined-baffle anaerobic baffled reactor(ABR)with six compartments was applied to treat domestic wastewater. The hydraulic characteristics of the reactor,COD removal efficiency, content of volatility fatty acid(VFA)and sludge performance were investigated. As compared with conventional ABR,percentage of dead zone generally increased in the inclined baffled ABR,but sludge loss was effectively avoided.Domestic wastewater could be efficiently treated in the ABR,with less impact by the shock of COD fluctuation. The COD removal efficiency could reach about 70%.The content of VFA in ABR increased with the increase of the influent COD.The main component of VFA was acetic acid. The concentration of VFA decreased with the flow. The phenomena observed by microscopes and the increase of TSS in effluent showed that anaerobic granular sludge could disaggregate under high sludge load rate. The research showed that ABR is an economical, stable and efficient process for domestic wastewater treatment.
