A comparative study of mirtazapine and sertraline in the treatment of depression

Abstract

Objective To compare the efficacy and side effects of mirtazapine and sertraline in the treatment of depression.Methods A total of 86 outpatients with depression were randomly assigned into mirtazapine group(n=43)and sertraline group(n=43)for 6 weeks.The effects and adverse reactions were evaluated with Hamilton Depression Scale(HAMD),Clinical Global Impression(CGI)and Teatment Emergent Symptom Scale(TESS)before and after the treatment.Results The efficacy of mirtazapine was similar to sertraline ,but the side effects of mirtazapine were lower than those of sertraline,particularly in the sexual function.ConclusionMirtazapine is an effective and safe antidepressant.
