DESCRIPTION OF A NEW GENUS AND SPECIES OF DANIONINAE FROM CHINA(CYPRINIFORMES: CYPRINIDAE)

Gobiocypris. gen. nov.Type-species: Gobiocypris rarus, sp. nov.Diagnosis: The new genus is closely allied to Aphyocypris Gunther 1868, but differs from the latter mainly in the absence of an abdominal keel and in the origin of dorsal fin being above instead of behind the ventral fin base.Body small, slightly compressed. Abdomen rounded, without keel. Snout blunt. Inter orbital space broad and flattish. Mouth, terminal and oblique. No barbels present. Pharyngeal teeth in two rows. Gill-rakers thin and short. Eye superolateral. Lateral line incomplete. Dorsal without osseous ray, 3,7-8, commencing a little belling the origin of ventral and oppo-siting to the base of it. Anal 3,6-7. Body length 35-60 mm.D. 3,7-8; A. 3,6-7; P. 1,11-12; V. 2,7-8; C, 17.Scales in a longitudinal series 31-34, in a transverse setiles 8-9, predorsal 12-14, circumpeduncular 12. Lateral line incomplete, pored scales 6-20. Gill-rakers 5-6 (outer) and 8 (inner). Pharyngeal teeth 2,4-4.2 (1.4-4.2 or 2.4-4.1). Vertebrae 4+30. Depth 3.41-4.83 in body length, head 3.38-3.95, length of caudal peduncle 4.45-5.89. Snout 3.20-4.03 in head, eye 3.27-4.85, interorbital space 2.40-2.92. Depth of C-peduncle in its length 1.29-1.92.Body small, more or less compressed. Upper and lower jaws normal and neatly equal. Lips thin and smooth. Postlabial groove not continuous. Barbels absent. Eye moderate, supe-rolateral, its hind margin midway between tip of snout and gill opening. Nostrils close together, nearer to front margin of eye than to tip of snout.Dorsal commencing nearly midway between the anterior margin of eye and the root of caudal. Pectoral fin not reaching origin of ventral and ventral not reaching origin of anal fin. Origin of ventral slightly before that of dorsal. Caudal forked.Air-bladder bipartite. Peritoneum silvery.Color in formalin grayish brown, a broad blackish longitudinal band above the lateral line from the upper angle of gill opening to the root of caudal. Colour in fresh, body washing yellowish luster.Holotype: No. 6-0526, body length 53mm, collected from Liusha River, a tributary of the Dadu River at Jiuxiang, Hanyuan county, Sichuan, 1060 M, on 24. VII. 1980, and preserved in the Sichuan Agricultural College. Paratypes 14, body length 35-60 mm, collected from the same place in 1979,1980 and 1981 respectively, 9 deposited in the Sichuan Agricultural College and 5 in the Institute of Hydrobiology, Academia Sinica.
