Abstract
An Introduction to Literature, a book penned by Yang Chun-shi, Yu Zhao-ping and Huang Ming-feng, is unique in that it renders a three-dimensional explanation for literary essence, thus having provided literary noumenon with a multi-structure and clarified the image of literature. The literary ontology, which is composed of multi-layered literary essences, various literary functions and varied literary categories, is of great applied value in literary practice as well as of much guidance in literary activities. Such a concept of literary ontology is advantageous to the determination of the orientation in literary activities in line with the needs of society and human beings. Since the literary revolution of the May 4th Movement, there have often emerged imbalances in the field of new Chinese literature, which have much to do with the shortage of theoretic consciousness in terms of literary essential functions. The multi-layered literary ontology has virtually built an overpass for literature in the new century so that literature of various types, say, serious literature, popular literature and pure literature, can go along their own ways towards their respective destination.
