Prevalence of smoking among residents in Fenghua city,Zhejiang province

Objective To understand the prevalence of smoking among residents in Fenhua.Methods The questionnaire survey on the prevalence of smoking among 600 residents selected by multi stage stratified random sampling in Fennghua.Results The smoking rate among the residents was 25.83%,and the standardized smoking rate was 24.79%.The smoking rate in males(58.56%) was higher than that in females(0.30%).The average age of the smokers to start smoking was 21.13 years old,the average number of cigarettes smoked per day was 20.13 and the average cost was 14.93 yuan(RMB) for one box of cigarettes.The rate of smoking cessation was 28.90%,and the rate of passive smoking was 54.83%.Conclusion It is necessary to strengthen the health education about tobacco control among the males.The average age when the smokers started to smoke had declined.Much effort should be made on tobacco control in Fenghua by multi sectoral cooperation.
