CLINICAL OBSERVATION OF TREATING THE EPILEPSY WITH TOPIRAMATE

Objective: A clinical trial was conducted to observe the effect,dosage and security of topiramate (TPM) therapy for epilepsy. Methods: The starting doses of TPM were 25 mg/d for adult and 12.5 mg/d for child. We observed and recorded the times of seizures for three months. Keeping the dose for the patients that symptom was controlled,increasing the dose for the patients that symptom was not controlled or controlled was reduction, The maximum doses were 350 mg/d, the minimum doses were 50 mg/d. Thereafter we followed 48 weeks, and recorded the frequency of seizures, side effect and arose time of that. Results: 35 patients entered the study. Symptom controlled rate was 71.43% after three months, after six months was 76%. Symptom mostly controlled rate was 17.14% after three months, after six months was 20%. Rate of ineffective or indistinctive effect was 17.14% after three months, after six months was 20%. Side effect rate was 68% and mostly were slight, all patients were improve after treated, and few had serious side effect. Conclusion: TPM was effective and safe, dosage should be individuation.
