Evolution of the Cities:Urban Life in Zhang Ai-ling and Wang An-yi' Fictions

Abstract

City develops, transforms and matures. Shanghai, the biggest city of China, as seen from novels by Zhang Ailing and Wang Anyi, has also evolved, from the mixing of modernity and tradition of the 30s and 40s to an open modern metropolis. This paper compares narrative time and space of Zhang Ailing and Wang Anyi ' fictions from three directions. This difference evolution has given narrators different urban experience and poetics. On the other hand, this different narration also explains evolution of Shanghai. 
