Abstract

Aim To compare the side effects of intensity modulated radiotherapy(IMRT) and conventional radiotherapy in na-sopharyngeal carcinoma. Methods Among 45 cases of nasopharyngeal carcinoma, there were 20 of IMRT and 25 of conventional radio-therapy.The target areas in IMRT were nasopharyngeal carcinoma, parapharyngeal space and neck lymphatic area with the fractional doseof 2Gy/time,for 30~35 times. The conventional radiotherapy group was given face-neck joint radiation,DT 70 Gy,35 times. The reinforcing dosage in pre-auricular field increased to DT 70 GY in the nasopharyngeal area. The total amount of neckprevention was DT 50~55 Gy.Results The CR rate in IMRT group(90%)was higher than that in the CRT group(76%).The fouth degree dry mouth incidence in the IMRT and conventional radiotherapy groups was 0 case and 8 case respectively, the incidence of difficulty in opening mouth in the IMRT and conventional radiotherapy groups was 1 case and 2 case respectively. There was significant difference between the two groups(P0.01).Conclusion IMRT may improve the control rate and the decreases obviously the side effects compared with the conventional radiotherapy.
