Collapse of Goodman Brown's Faith——Perspective from Freudian Psychoanalytical Theories

This article,by applying Freudian psychoanalytical theories,offers a new interpretation on Young Goodman Brown written by Nathaniel Hawthorne.The paper first,through analyzing original sin,points out that evil is one of human instincts,and that the whole story stems from this very instinct.Then,the paper focuses on the mental struggles and the collapse of faith of the protagonist from the perspective of Freudian theories of Personality Structure.Therefore it concludes that the agony of the protagonist lies in the fierce conflicts between his ego and super-ego,and in his personality disorder caused by the collapse of his ego-ideal.
