Abstract

Objective:To approach the role of free redicals played in the pathogenesis of pneumonia. Methods:Serum superoxide dismutase(SOD)and lipid peroxide (LPO) levels were measured in children with pneumonia. Results:Compared to control, the LPO levels were significantly elevated and SOD levels and the SOD:LPO ratio significantly reduced in the acute phase of pneumonia (P0.01);the values almost returned to normal in the recovery phase. Conclusion:In the acute phase of pneumonia, oxidation of antibodies was hyperactive and antioxidation hypoactive;free radicals took part in and aggravated the pathogenesis of pneumonia;damage to the bodies by the radicals might be basically ceased in the recovery phase.
