Abstract

The colour reaction of zinc(Ⅱ) with a new reagent 4-(2-pyridylazo)-pyrocatechol (PAPC) is studied in this paper. In a pH 9.5 buffer medium, the reagent reacts with Zn(Ⅱ) to form a stable orange complex, which has an absorption maxima at 494nm, with an apparent molar absorptivity of 6.66×10 4L·mol -1 ·cm -1 . Beer′s law is obeyed in the range of 0~25μg/25ml solution. The proposed method has been successfully applied to the determination of Zn(Ⅱ) in aluminum alloy and alloy steel with satisfactory results.
