Persistence on the "Individuality"——A Brief Analysis of Zhou Zuoren's Artistic Pursuit

As an important literature theorist during the May 4th Movement of 1919,Zhou Zuoren has been put much attention on.However,studies usually classify his theory into two periods: the former and the later,which simplifies his artistic pursuit.Actually,Zhou Zuoren's theory is complex and comprehensive,and is not unitary during his different periods.It is the sophistic combination of gentleman/rogue,recluse/traitor and present/past.At the same time,within his comprehensive academic system,Zhou Zuoren puts the basic academic concern of the individuality as his focus,and adjust the relationship between literature and individuality according to the changes of times and literature pursuits.
