Abstract

Objective To investigate the characteristics of rotavirus infection among infants and children with diarrhea in Urumqi.Methods A total of 503 fecal samples were collected from children under 5 years old with diarrhea and examined for rotavirus antigen by colloidal gold method and ELISA in 2010.Rotavirus strains were classified into G and P types with type-specific primers.Results Rotavirus was detected in 122 of 503(24.25%) diarrheal children.Ninety-five percent(95.08%) of patients with rotavirus diarrhea were less than 35 months old.G-typing showed that G3(44.08%) was predominant,followed by G1(34.31%),G9(11.76%),G2(4.94%) and G mixed infection(4.90%).P[8] was predominant genotype(67.65%),followed by P mixed(19.61%),P[4](6.86%),P[6](4.90%) and undetermined(1,1%) respectively for P-typing.The most common G/P combination were G3P[8](33.29%) and G1P[8](27.45%).Conclusion Rotavirus was the major cause of diarrhea among young children in Urumqi.G3P[8] and G1P[8] strains were the most prevalent genotypes in 2010.
