Abstract
AIM: To compare the effects of amlodipine and nifedipine in treating aged with simple systolic hypertension. METHODS: Thirty_four patients (M 20, F 14; age 68.8 a±s 1.2 a) received amlodipine 5_10 mg, po, qd for 8 wk. Another 34 patients (M 18, F 16; age 67.8 a±1.3 a) received nifedipine 10_20 mg, po, tid for 8 wk. RESULTS: The clinical total effective rate of amlodipine group was 94%, without significant difference with that of the nifedipine group (91%) (P0.05). Adverse reactions of amlodipine group were fewer than those of nifedipine group (12% vs 24%, P0.01). CONCLUSION: Amlodipine is a safe and effective drug. It is superior to nifedipine in treating aged with systolic hypertension.
