Abstract

Objective To compare the antimicrobial efficacy of alcohol extract and water extract of honeysuckle leaves. Methods The antimicrobial effects of alcohol extract and water extract of honeysuckle leaves were observed and compared by experiments with paper dish methods and measuring minimal inhibitory concentration. Results The diameters of bacterial inhibition zones of the ethanol extract honeysuckle leaves, containing 1000 mg.mL-1 crude drug, were larger than 8mm.And the diameter of bacterial inhibition zones of the water extract, containing 842 mg.mL-1 crude drug, were smaller than 8mm.The minimal inhibitory concentration of alcohol extract to the Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis was 1:8.The minimal inhibitory concentration of alcohol extract to the E.coli was 1:16.Conclusion The honeysuckle alcohol extract revealed obvious antimicrobial effect, but water extract from honeysuckle leaf showed no inhibitory effect.
