Cooperative principle and English humorous discourse analysis

Abstract
The author analyzes the humorous discourse produced by the intentional violation of the maxims of the cooperative principle,and uses the principle of politeness and the other four principles proposed by Leech to explain this violation.Intentional violation of the maxims of the cooperative principle leads to the production of conversational implicature,which tactfully conveys the deep meaning of the speaker,that is,the pragmatic meaning.It is through the communication of this pragmatic meaning that the humorous discourse is used to cope with problems or embarrassment in life,or to amuse life by making communication more interesting.The principle of politeness and the other four principles proposed by Leech can be used to explain why people intentionally violate the maxims of the cooperative principle to produce humorous discourse in the process of communication.
