Abstract
Objective To study the relationship between angiography and the outcome of carotid body tumor. MethodsNine patients treated from November 1996 to February 2006, which included SHAMBLIN typeⅠ(n=4),Ⅱ(n=1) and Ⅲ(n=4), were recruited for the study. All of them were diagnosed by DSA and underwent surgery: simple excision (4 cases); tumor resection and external carotid ligation (1); resection of tumor (1); resection of jugular vein,internal, external carotid and vagus (1); resection of tumor, external carotid and anastomosis of common and internal carotid (2) ; resection of tumor, external and common and internal carotid reconstruction with autogenous vein (1). Results One case recurred and died three days after second operation. Two had hypoglossal nerve injury, of which, one had temporary lingual paralysis, another was permanent. ConclusionDSA plays an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of carotid body tumor. Appropriated surgery based on angiography can achieve a good result with few complications.
