Clinical analysis of eighty-one patients with carotid body tumor

Objective To investigate the diagnosis and treatment of carotid body tumor.Methods Among the 81cases of carotid body tumor,42 cases underwent simple tumor resection,24 cases underwent resection of both the internal and external carotid arterry and the tumor without carotid reconstruction,8 cases were performed with tumor resection and internal carotid repairation,5 cases were performed with tumor resection and internal carotid arterial anastomosis;2 cases underwent resection of the internal and external carotid arterry and the tumor with internal carotid reconstruction.Results 81 cases were followed up for 1～13 years,average 11 years.All the patients didn′t died during the operation,the tumors in 72 cases were resected completely,and the prognosis was good,the tumors in 9 cases were resected partly,and among these patients,3 patients died of heart disease,the tumor metastasis to basilar region and lung;the others were still living when the last following-up.After operation,one case was paralytic,the cranial nerve complication occured in 5 cases,and the lingual nerve injury in 25 cases.Conclusion The patients with carotid body tumor should be operated as early as possible with suitable way selected according to the relation between the tumor and the carotid.
