Abstract
Flood detention areas play a very important role in flood management of our country.The Mengwa Flood Detention Area is located at the middle reaches of the Huaihe River,it is one of the most important flood-control facilities in this basin.A 2-D unsteady flow model with irregular grids is applied to simulate flood propagation in the Mengwa Flood Detention Area and is calibrated by using recorded data of flood in 2003.The result shows that the model can simulate flood in the Mengwa Flood Detention Area with a good precision.The flood risk due to inundation is also analyzed in this paper.The result of the simulation will provide reference for the planning,regional development and management of the Mengwa Flood Detention Area,and even for the flood management of the whole Huaihe River basin.
