Abstract
Methyl 2-methyl-(-oxophenylacetate was synthesized by the hydrolysis of 2-methyl-α-oxobenzoyl cyanidewith concentrated sulfuric acid.Effect of concentrated sulfuric acid,reaction temperature,time and solvent on yields wasstudied.The ratio of 2-methyl-α-oxobenzoyl cyanide:sodium chloride:water:concentrated sulphuric acid was chosen as 10:1:10:10 and the mixture was kept in 45℃ for one hour to give the yield of 78%,with purity of 90.69%.
