Abstract

Objective To assess the impact of late elective percutaneous coronary intervention(PCI) on left ventricular(LV) function in elderly patients with myocardial infarction. Methods forty-five patients with fist-times myocardial infarction, were prospectively studied and divided into two groups.Group I included 25 patients who underwent successful PCI((4.9±3.1)weeks after myocardial infarction),and group II comprised 20 patients who had not undergone PCI.In both groups, serial echocardiographic examinations and electrocardiogram were performed before and during follow up to assess the changes in QRS score,LV volumes, systolic and diastolic function. Results During follow-up,LV volumes and QRS score were decreased, and systolic function was improved after PCI,but LV diastolic function remain unchanged. But compared with control group,LV volumes of the PCI group was smaller,LV systolic and diastolic function were better than the control group. Conclusion The late elective PCI may significantly improve functional status of the elderly patients with myocardial infarction.
