A Cross-Sectional Study on Hyperuricemia in Faculty of A University

Abstract

Objective:To assess the prevalence of hyperuricemia and its risk factors among faculty members in one university of Wuhan.Methods:A population of 5 804 faculty were selected as the subjects,interviewed with questionnaire and conducted physical examination and laboratory examination.According to diagnostic criteria of hyperuricemia,the subjects were divided into case and control groups respectively.Results:The overall prevalence for hyperuricemia in the studied population was 15.0%,and it was significantly higher in men as compared to women(20.1% vs 7.2%,P0.001).The frequency of overweight,obesity,hypertension,hypercholesterolemia,hypertriglyceridemia,hyperglycosemia,and high blood urea nitrogen in case group was higher than that respectively in control group(all P0.05).The results of the gender stratified multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that in males,overweight or obesity and hypertriglyceridemia were independent risk factors of hyperuricemia,and in females,another two factors including high blood urea nitrogen and hypercholesterolemia appeared to be independent risk factors of hyperuricemia as well.Conclusion:University faculty menbers with above independent risk factors were susceptive to hyperuricemia,and they are the focus of prevention and control.
