Abstract

Succinic acid producted by anaerobic fermentation using corn stalk hydrolysate as carbon source was studied. However, the hydrolysate contained,in addition to sugars, several compounds that are toxic to microorganisms. In order to improve the fermentability of the hydrolysate, several procedures were evaluated for detoxication of the hydrolysate. The concentration of inhibitors and total sugar in the corn stalk hydrolysate were investigated. The results showed that activated charcoal conbinated with Ca(OH)2 treatment was the effective method for removing the inhibitors.By this treatment,91.11% of furfural and 89.83% of hydroxymethylfurfural were removed from the hydrolysate, while the loss of total sugar was only 5.57%.The concentration of succinic acid reached 66.23g/L with the yield of 67.28% from the detoxified corn stalk hydrolysate, which were 24.81g/L,25.30% higher than that with the initial hydtolysate, respectively.
