Abstract

The authors studied the bank training of the wandering channel of the lower Yellow River, which is very wide, shallow and unstable. The present river channel is too large for river training. It is suggested to train the river channel on both banks to meet the requirement for flood discharge and sediment transport. The river pattern of a straight flood path is to be selected according to local conditions.By means of training the wandering river on both banks, the riverbed will be scoured by clear water released from the Xiaolangdi Reservoir.A narrow, deep, straight and stable path with a narrow channel and wide beach would be developed and the discharge capacity of the channel will be enlarged for both floodwater and sediment. This paper discussed in detail the reasonability and feasibility of river training on both banks in terms of techniques.Study was also made on selecting the channel width and the arrangement of counterpart spurs on both banks.
