Abstract
The paper analyzes the basic situation of artificial density current formed in the Xiaolangdi Reservoir area during a regulated discharge regime in 2006 and points out that a) the density current has the characteristics of smaller inflow, lower location of dividing flow, quick velocity of routing and greater sediment delivery rate;b) it needs at least 550 million m3 inflow,20 million tons of coming fine sand, the water level in front of the dam lower than 230 m,the inflow during density current should be greater than 3 000 m3/s and the flush discharge also should be kept around 3 700 m3/s for creating an artificial density current in the Xiaolangdi Reservoir and;c) the sediment tunnel should be opened in advance for increasing the sediment delivery rate of density current. It also suggests a) establish an observation and study group of density current of the reservoir area and;b) input necessary facilities and equipment for measuring and actively developing new instruments and software that can meet the requirements for measuring reservoir density current.
