Relationship Between Changes of Bone Mineral Density and Serum Interleukin-6Level in Postmenopausal Women

Abstract

Objective To investigate the relationship between changes of bone mineral density and serum inˉterlerkin-6level in postmenopausal women.Methods BMD at the junction of the middle and the distal thirds of non-dominant ulna was measured by single photon bone denstometer in38postmenopausal women.BMD0.601g/cm 2 serves as the diagnostic criterion for osteoporosis.According to this,38women were divided into two groups:normal postmenopausal group(n=20,mean age57±4)and postmenopausal osteoporotic group(n=18,mean age59±5).The release of IL-6and other marker of bone metabolism were determined.Results There were no sigˉnificant differences between two groups in age,stature,weight,BMI,serum calcium and phosphorus,E 2 ,and T(P0.05).There were significant differences between two groups in menopause duration,ALP,BGP,BMD,and IL-6(P0.05).Conclusions The decrease in E 2 level after menopause is the main factor in promoting the secretion of IL-6,the high level of IL-6activates osteoclasts,with the elapse of time resulting in osteoporosis.
