Abstract
Ethernet passive optical network(EPON) is a broadband access system based on Ethernet technology and passive optical network(PON) technology which can realize broadband,voice and video services access.EPON is the core technology of FTTH(fiber to the home).According to the ONU placed at different positions,Optical access network can be divided into FTTH,FTTB,FTTO etc.,each access mode has its network characteristics and user groups.EPON is the best way to realize FTTx technology for high bandwidth,low cost and convenient mode of fiber network.First some cases of EPON technology in optical access network is cited,then typical technical characteristics,business processes and network structure are also discussed,finally,the EPON and NGN(next generation network) interconnection and voice access are analyzed.
