Abstract
Objective:To study whether the glucose tolerance was impaired in the non-hyperglycemic rats treated with strepto-zotocin(STZ).Methods:Male SD rats, aged 10 ̄12 weeks, were divided into two groups:experimental group, with an intraperitoneal injection of 30 mg/kg(low dose)or 60 mg/kg(high dose)STZ;control group, with injection of equal dose acidified saline.1 ̄12 weeks after injection, the intraperitoneal glucose tolerance tes(tIPGTT)was performed in the non-hyperglycemic rats(fasting blood glucose 10 mmol/L)treated with STZ.Results:There was no significant difference in the fasting blood glucose or IPGTT between the control and the low dose groups.2/9 ̄3/5 of the non-hyperglycemic rats treated with high dose STZ had abnormal IPGTT,i.e,at 120 min after intraperitoneal injection of 50% glucose(2 g/kg),the fasting blood glucose levels were high-er than those in all the animals in the corresponding control group,and≥10 mmol/L.Conclusion:Low dose STZ did not in-duce hyperglycemia or abnormal IPGTT in all rats, and the non-hyperglycemic rats treated with high dose STZ had an impaired glucose tolerance.
