Relationship of vascular endothelial growth factor C and its receptor-3 with lymphatic metastasis of gastric cancer

Abstract

Objective To investigate the relationship of vascular endothelial growth factor C( VEGF-C) and its receptor-3( VEGFR-3) with lymphatic metastasis of gastric cancer. Methods Seventy-eight cases of primary gastric cancer patients in our hospital from Jan. 2012 to Jan. 2013 were collected to detect expression of VEGF-C and VEGFR-3 proteins. Compared with 20 cases of normal gastric tissue distal cut end of pathologically confirmed gastric cancer patients,lymph node metastasis was analyzed. Results Expression of VEGF-C was negative in normal gastric mucosa. VEGF-C located in the cytoplasm of cancer cells in gastric cancer tissues and showed a diffuse distribution. In 78 cases of gastric cancer,expression of VEGF-C was positive in 60 cases,the positive rate was 76. 92%,there was statistically significant in VEGF-C positive rate between normal gastric mucosa group and gastric cancer group( P 0. 01). VEGFC expression was related with histological grade,depth of invasion,lymph node metastasis and TNM staging. VEGFR-3 in normal gastric mucosa cells coloured uniformity,mainly distributed in the cytoplasm,the positive expression rate was 10. 00%; expression of VEGFR-3 in gastric cancer tissues was spotty or diffuse distribution,the positive rate was 66. 67%,there was statistically significant in VEGF-C positive rate between normal gastric mucosa group and gastric cancer group( P 0. 01); VEGFR-3 expression was related with histological grade,lymph node metastasis and TNM staging. VEGF-C and VEGFR-3 expression was positively correlated. Conclusion VEGF-C and VEGFR-3 play important roles in occurrence,development and lymphatic metastasis of gastric cancer.
