Abstract

Objective To analyze the relationship among electronic monitoring of fetal heart rate(FHR), fetal distress and rate of cesarean section. Methods The patterns of electronic monitoring of fetal heart rate in 2 337 pregnant women in this hospital from June of 2005 to May of 2007 were retrospectively studied and analyzed. Results Abnormal patterns were found in 191 cases, and cesarean section had been carried out in 112 of them for consideration of fetal distress. Abnormal condition of fetus had been found in 86 cases during the operation and normal condition in remaining cases. The incidence rates of contamination of amniotic fluid by meconium, cord entanglement and neonatal asphyxia were obviously higher in cases with reduced or disappeared FHR-baseline,VD and LD than those with other abnormal patterns. Conclusion Electronic monitoring of fetal heart rate could find fetal distress in time. If the diagnosis of fetal distress only relied on electronic monitoring of fetal heart rate, we would make a false positive judgment. When the abnormal patterns appeared, we should take a close observation for choosing correct laboring method to reduce the death rate of newborns according to degree of abnormality and given laboring time.
