Abstract

Objective To evaluate the short-term efficacy of deep brain stimulation for treatment of Parkinson's disease(PD).Methods From August 2006 to November 2008,twelve patients with medically intractable PD underwent the surgery of deep brain stimulation,L-Dopa challenging tests were completed in all patients before operation,MRI imaging-based anatomic targeting and microelectrode recording techniques were employed to locate the functional target of STN.The optimal place of electrode implant were precisely located with the help of intra-operating stimulation to assess the improvement of symptom and MRI scan to affirm the electrode location. The Unified Parkinson disease rating scale(UPDRS)motor scores were evaluated both preoperatively and postoperatively. Results Twenty two electrods were implanted into the subthalamic nucleus(unilateral 2,bilateral 10).MRI scan showed that all the electrodes were at the dorsal of STN.There were no intracranial hematoma, infect and permanent neuro-complication and other side effect relevant to stimulation. The patients were follow-up from 2 to 28 months.Improvement rate of UPDRSⅢ in the condition of on stimulation off medication and on stimulation on medication six months after surgery was 50% and 67%,respectively.Conclusions The short-term efficacy of deep brain stimulation for Parkinson's is marked.Good DBS procedure is the guarantee of good curative outcome.
