Abstract

Objective It was suggested that the study describe the technical approach and to assess the efficacy and safety of deep brain stimulation in subthalamic nucleus(STN) of Parkinson's disease (PD). Methods 61 patients with medically intractable PD underwent deep brain stimulation of STN between January 2000 and February 2004. Unilateral implanting was performed in 30 cases and bilateral implanting was 31 cases. The target was identified by the combination of MRI neuroimaging with microeleetrode recording. The effect of stimulation was evaluted by the Unified Parkinson's disease rating scale(UPDRS) when the stimulation was turned on or off. Rusults The mean follow-up duration was 11.3 months (range 6 to 36 months). Improvement of the UPDRS motor scores was 45.2% when the stimulation was turned on and 20. 7% when the stimulation was turned off without any undesirable side effects. Conclusion The study showed that the stimulation of STN results significant control of the motor symptoms of the patients.STN is a target in the surgical treatment of PD.It's ability for STN stimulation to reduce the dosage of dopaminergic medications.
