Phacoemulsification of the crystalline lens and foldable intraocular lens implantation for the correction of high myopia:Long term evaluation.

Abstract
Objective To assess the long-term efficacy on the phacoemulsification of the crystalline lens and foldable intraocular lens implantation for the correction of high myopia. Methods Phacoemulsification and foldable intraocular lens implantation was performed on 28 eyes of 20 high myopic patients with crystalline lens. The average age of patients was 47.8 years (43-58 years). The mean preoperative spherical equivalent was -8.77±5.62D and the mean axial length was 28.16±2.75mm. The average diopter of lOL was 4.5±5.3D. Postoperative best-corrected visual acuity, manifest refraction, corneal endothelial cells counting and the surgical complications were examined with a 24-32 month follow-up . Results The surgery was uneventful in all eyes. The best corrected visual acuity of 0.5 or better was achieved in 75.00% of the eyes after surgery. The mean spherical equivalent was -2.25±1.50D. The average loss rate of the comeal endothelial cells was 1.9%. 1 eye (3.57%)) with retinal detachment and 2 eyes (7.14%) with posterior capsular opacification were observed in this series . Conclusion Phacoemulsification of the crystalline lens and foldable intraocular lens implantation could be one of safe and effective method for the correction of high myopia. Thorough preoperative ophthalmic examinations, skillful surgical techniques and suitable IOL are the key points to success .
