The Effects of Valsartan and Benazepril in Elderly Patients with Essential Hypertension

Abstract

Objective To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Valsartan and Compare with that of benazepril in patients from mild to moderate elderly essential hypertension.Methods Patients were randomly assingned to Valsartan group 52cases 80 -160mg/d,or Benazepril group 51 cases 10～20mg/d for4 weeks and 8 weeks.Results The systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) decreased significantly in both groups after 2 weeks (P＜0.01);blood pressure decreased smoothy and continuously during the entire treatment period;The total efficacy rate for decreased DBP after 4 weeks and 8 weeks treatment of Valsartan were 86.4% and 92.3% respectively,that of Benazepril group were 84.3% and 90.2% respectively (P＞0.05).Conclusion Valsartan is a safe,effective,long acting anti-hypertension drug,tolerable and light side-effect.
