Abstract

Objective To study the effect of carvediloKCAR) on the neointimal formation in rats with injured carotid artery by balloon. Methods Thirty-six male Wistar rats were randomly divided into the sham-operated group, the injury group, and the CAR group (n = 12).The model was established by balloon injury of rat carotid arteries except the sham-operated group.Carotid tissues of three groups were harvested 7 d and 14 d after the injury. The target vascular sections were stained with HE to study the morphology changes. The expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen(PCNA) in arterial wall was detected by immunohistochemistry. Results No neointima was found in the sham-operated group.Compared with the sham-operated group, the neointima was formed and thickened on d 7 in the injury group.Fourteen days after injury, the neointima was continuously thickened (P 0.01).Compared with the injury group, the neointimal area decreased by 44% (P 0.01) ,luminal area increased by 82% (F 0.01) ,and the PCNA positive cells were significantly decreased (P 0.01) in the CAR group after 14 days. Conclusions Carvedilol may inhibit neointimal formation in rats with injured carotid artery by balloon.
