Abstract
The ecological footprint method is biophysical assessment method for assessment of ecological capacity and measuring the ecological imperative of sustainability. In this paper the methodology for predicting urban ecological footprint is discribed, and the ecological footprint and ecological capacity of Urumqi in 2004 are calculated. The results showed that the ecological footprint per cap and the ecological capacity are respectively 3.424389hm2 and 0.358905hm2,and the ecological deficit is 3.065484hm2,so that the city is ecologically unsustainable.
