The effect of Helicobacter pylori infection on hyperammonaemia in liver cirrhosis

Abstract

Objective To study Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection on ammonia concentrations in patients with cirrhosis. Methods Group A was consisted of 51 cases of cirrhotic patients without Hp infection.Group B included 27 cases of cirrhotic patients without Hp infection.Group C was patients with peptic ucler or gastritis with Hp infection.Each patient in all groups was tested and compared with change in serum ammonia concentration before and 4 weeks after Hp eradication therapy.Results The serum ammonia concentration in Group A was significantly higher than Group B and Group C (P0.01). While there was no difference between Group B and Group C (P0.05). After eradication therapy for Hp, ammonia concentration in Group A was lower apparently (~P0.01 ). In Group A, the serum ammonia concentration was increased as Child-Pugh classification from A to C (~P0.05 ). While there was no difference in Group B (~P0.05 ).Conclusions Hp infection was closely related with hyperammonaemia in patents with liver cirrhosis. The serum ammonia concentration was decreased after Hp eradication.
