Abstract

Objective To investigate the effect of vascular epithelial growth factor-C(VEGF-C) and Smad4 in the lymphangiogenesis and lymph node metastasis in colon carcinoma. Methods Expression of VEGF-C,VEGFR-3,TGF-β1,TβR-II and Smad4 and lymphatic vessel density(LVD) were immunohistochemically evaluated in 79 colon cancer patients. Results LVD values were positively correlated with the expression level of VEGF-C,negatively correlated with the expression level of Smad4.The expression level of VEGF-C protein in lymph node metastasis group was higher than that in non-lymph node metastasis group(0.001).The expression level of Smad4 protein in lymph node metastasis group was less than that in non-lymph node metastasis group(=0.001).VEGF-C expression was negatively correlated with the expression of Smad4(0.001,R=-0.507).Conclusion VEGF-C and Smad4 might be involved in lymphangiogenesis and lymphatic metastasis in colon carcinoma.
