Application of ultrasound-guided core-needle biopsy to lung lesion

Abstract

Objective:To obtain definite pathologic diagnosis by applying ultrasound guided core-needle biopsy to the lung lesion. Methods: The approximate location of the lesion was identified by consulting CT image. After the lesion was clearly shown by ultrasound, puncture approach was selected.The specimens were obtained with American Bard adjustable automatic biopsy device(18G needle). Then histological examination was performed.Results: A total of 209 cases with lung lesion received biopsy. The success rate of the first puncture was 98% (205 cases), 4 cases needed a second percutaneous biopsy. The rate of definite histological diagnosis was 94.7% (198 cases). Nine cases had complications, including hemoptysis (6 cases) and pneumothorax (3 cases). No severe complications occurred. Conclusion:Ultrasound-guided core-needle biopsy is a safe and feasible diagnostic method for the lung lesion and is worthy of wide application.
