A clinical observation of aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy for condyloma acuminatum

Objective To evaluate the efficiency of topical 5-aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy(ALA-PDT) in the treatment of condyloma acuminatum(CA).Methods Patients with condyloma acuminatum were assigned to the ALA-PDT group and the cryotherapy group(control)(127 in the ALA-PDT group and 47 in the control group).Results A total of 174 patients with condyloma acuminatum were enrolled in the clinical tria1.One week after the treatment,53.19% and 73.23% of the base line warts were eliminated totally in the control group and the ALA-PDT group,respectively.At 2 weeks after the treatment,complete remission was 63.83% for the cryotherapy group and 85.83% for the ALA-PDT group,respectively(P0.01).At 3 weeks after the treatment,93.70% and 70.21% of the base line warts were eliminated in the ALA-PDT group and the control group,respectively(P0.01).Furthermore,the overall relapse rate in ALA-PDT group was 10.17%(6/59),which was significantly lower than that in cryotherapy group(15/33,45.45%).Conclusion Compared with cryotherapy,ALA-PDT has the advantages of a higher therapeutic efficacy and a lower relapse rate.
